SUMMARY:Marlborough LitFest - Celia Imrie\, Meet me at Rainbow Corner *SOLD OUT*
DESCRIPTION:Celia Imrie is best known as an award-winning actress\, starring in films such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel\, Calendar Girls and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Over the last ten years\, however\, she has developed an impressive side hustle as a bestselling historical novelist. Her acclaimed Nice trilogy was followed by other hits\, including Sail Away and Orphans of the Storm. \nHer latest book\, Meet Me at Rainbow Corner\, recreates the unique wartime atmosphere of The American Red Cross Club for servicemen on Shaftesbury Avenue in London. It’s here that nurse Dot Gallagher\, freshly arrived from Liverpool\, discovers a haven away from wartime Britain. She discovers love too as she dances the nights away with GIs. There was no rationing in this patch of America in central London – the chewing gum\, donuts and cola were free-flowing – and a steady stream of stars performed at the club\, including Bette Davis\, Fred Astaire and Glenn Miller. \nImrie will be presenting an illustrated talk with her historical researcher\, Fidelis Morgan\, about the true war-bride stories of courage and camaraderie that lie behind her new novel. “Utterly\ncharming and engrossing\,” says Joanna Lumley. “Hugely enjoyable and meticulously researched…. A must for anyone who likes wartime novels with a difference\,” agrees Rosie Goodwin.

SUMMARY:Marlborough LitFest - Jonathan Dimbleby - Endgame 1944 *SOLD OUT*
DESCRIPTION:While Allied forces were winning through on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944\, Russian troops were embarking upon Operation Bagration on the Eastern Front. After three years of stalemate\, two million Red Army soldiers were pitted against 500\,000 German adversaries\, seeking revenge for their defeat in Operation Barbarossa. The bloody battles along 2000 kilometres proved decisive in defeating Hitler’s forces\, with the loss of 28 out of 32 divisions. \nIn Endgame 1944\, broadcaster and journalist Jonathan Dimbleby\, a familiar voice to us all and now acclaimed for his Second World War histories\, has drawn on previously untranslated German and Russian sources\, many from ‘ordinary’ soldiers\, to paint a picture of this momentous year in all its complexity. His dramatic narrative also sets the backdrop for the relationship between the ‘big three’ of Churchill\, Roosevelt and Stalin\, explaining how the Soviet leader was able to exert such influence on the post-war settlement. \n“It shines a light for general readers on a period of history often the preserve of Eastern Front academics\,” says historian Colonel Robert Kershaw. “It’s a story too little known\, and Dimbleby tells it brilliantly\,” agrees Sir Rodrick Braithwaite\, author of Moscow 1941.

SUMMARY:History Society: Marlborough’s Hidden Places
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER:  Bob Holman \nBob Holman has lived in Marlborough for a number of years and is a semi-retired coffee shop owner (The Food Gallery). After discovering the incredible capabilities of his iPhone camera\, he has developed a passion for black and white photography. \nTOPIC:\nBob Holman is a local photographer who has discovered that there is a wealth of historical features that belong to Marlborough which have been hidden away over the years. A project developed to find and capture on his iPhone what has been hidden away. He has searched for dungeons\, sewers and underground storage areas. The original plan was to try and plot a kind of subterranean map of the ‘alleyways’ underneath Marlborough\, following the unearthing of one some years ago. Recently\, he photographed an abandoned oven at the Castle and Ball Hotel in the High Street\, where he crawled through a small hole in the building to find it as staff waited outside. Bob said: “It was very dark\, very quiet and damp in there. I wouldn’t say I was scared but it is quite a strange feeling. There was definitely a ‘presence’ down there!”. \n  \nThe Marlborough History Society warmly welcomes guests to our talks at £5.00 per person. Students are free.\nMembership to the Marlborough History Society is £15.00 per annum. If you wish to become a member\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Sound Knowledge - Nick Harper
DESCRIPTION:Sound Knowledge by arrangement with Outsider Artists present Nick Harper. Shop favourite and acclaimed singer-songwriter/guitarist Nick Harper will be playing St. Peter’s on Saturday 30th March 2024 in a triumphant homecoming for the “acoustic Hendrix” as part of his Tempus Fugitive tour. Nick will need no introduction to most of you- he’s one of the shop’s most-capped performers but\, if you’re yet to catch him at one of our instores\, on one of his frequent tours or acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe runs\, this is not a normal ‘one man and guitar’ show. In a new\, uniquely styled\, acoustically driven album and live show\, Nick explores the past\, present and future in his own singular way. Expect everything from the emotional to the political\, from witty to virtuosic; the singular to the universal. New album Tempus Fugitive follows up recent successful sojourns back in time to explore swinging 60s London (58 Fordwych Rd); 19th century Fantasy literature and 1980s West Country romance (Phantastes) and an epic poem lost in time (A Wiltshire Tale) and manages to spin thematic elements of them all into a dizzying\, fluid and funky LP. We’re pleased to confirm that joining Nick as support on the night is Andrew Rumsey. The singer-songwriter and Anglican Bishop of Ramsbury\, whose work as lead bishop for church and cathedral buildings has fed into his writing on the relationship between theology and place\, will be playing some songs from from the acclaimed ‘Evensongs’ released earlier this year on Gare du Nord Records. Doors – 7.30pmAndrew Rumsey – 8pmNick Harper – 9pmTickets £16-advanced \nBuy your tickets here

SUMMARY:History Society: The Strange Death of Marlborough Union Workhouse
DESCRIPTION:The Strange Death of Marlborough Union Workhouse\nSPEAKER: Nick Baxter \nNick Baxter is a local historian\, author\, lecturer and tour guide \nTOPIC: \nOpened in 1837\, the Marlborough Union Workhouse’s early years were fraught with difficulties. In January 1849 inmates wrecked the kitchen and smashed windows. Boards covered the broken windows\, except in the able bodied men’s ward where the paupers were left to freeze. \nIn 1930 the workhouse became a Public Assistance Institution following the abolition of Poor Law Unions. Buildings were converted to the use of a Children’s Convalescent Home\, and later Hospital and School\, which closed in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s it was re-developed into luxury flats for older people. Controversy erupted when the developer chose to name the development “Digby Court” after a Civil War general who was involved in the sacking of the town in December 1642. After extensive media coverage “Digby Court” was dropped and replaced by “St Luke’s Court” after the patron saint of physicians. Further controversy came when the plaque\, identifying the building as originally a workhouse\, was removed by the developer. This was vigorously resisted and the plaque eventually reinstated. \nThe horrors of the Civil War\, and the sufferings of those incarcerated in the workhouse\, are not the images desired by some. But in attempting to erase those images\, history risks being distorted and sanitised. \n \nThe Marlborough History Society warmly welcomes guests to our talks at £5.00 per person. Students are free.\nMembership to the Marlborough History Society is £15.00 per annum. If you wish to become a member\, please click here. \n
