SUMMARY:Sound Knowledge - Wendy James\, Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled that Wendy James will be joining us for a stripped-back performance and signing in our spiritual home of St. Peter’s Church from 7pm on Monday 4th November\, to celebrate the release of her brand new album The Shape Of History. \nThe Shape Of History is the tenth solo album from the former Transvision Vamp frontwoman and was recorded on Scrubs Lane\, West London with Alex Ward\, Harry Bohay and James Sclavunos\, and in NYC and Brooklyn with Dave ‘The Moose’ Sherman. Engineered in Shepherd’s Bush by Al Lawson and mixed with Jesse Nichols in Berkeley CA before mastering with Fred Kevorkian in Brooklyn NY. \nJames says of the album\, “The Shape Of History has a lot about love in it\, a lot about appreciation of oneself\, one’s life and importantly\, of others. It is life’s arc of starting out\, blooming into something and in some ways maturing. I don’t think my music has got older\, I know I’ve not gone mellow!” \nTo pre-order a copy of ‘The Shape of History’ (released 25th October) on CD or LP and guarantee entry to this event\, click here.

SUMMARY:Brilliant International Musicians Series: Ingmar Lazar (solo piano)
DESCRIPTION:Doors open: 18:15\nConcert starts: 19:00 \nBorn in France in 1993\, Ingmar Lazar made his début at the age of 6 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Prizewinner of several international competitions\, he was the recipient of the Tabor Foundation Piano Award at the Verbier Festival in 2013. In 2020 he became prizewinner of the Ateliers Médicis\, with the support of the French Ministry of Culture\, and is a Steinway Artist.  \nHailed by the Classica Magazine as a “pianist of magnetic presence\,” Ingmar is internationally praised for his deep and moving performances\, as well as for his brilliant control and stupendous technique. He has firmly established himself as one of the leading French musicians of his generation.  \nHe performs in the world’s most prestigious halls such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam\, Herkulessaal in Munich\, International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg\, Verdi Hall of the Milan Conservatory\, La Seine Musicale in Paris\, and Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow\, to name a few. He is regularly invited to many distinguished festivals including Festspiele Mecklenburg- Vorpommern\, La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival\, Colmar International Festival\, Festival Chopin in Paris\, Sant Pere de Rhodes Music Festival\, and the Gotthard Klassik-Festival.  \nHe collaborates with conductors such as Vladimir Spivakov\, Jean- Jacques Kantorow\, Mathieu Herzog\, and Peter Vizard among many others\, and performs with orchestras including the National Philharmonic of Russia\, the Moscow Virtuosi\, the Orchestre Lamoureux\, L’Ensemble Appassionato\, Le Concert de la Loge\, and the Lviv Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra to name a few.  \nSince 2016\, Ingmar Lazar has been the founder and artistic director of the Festival du Bruit qui Pense\, in north-central France. Its goal is to create strong ties between artists and the audience with interactive post-concert interviews and discussions. He is also the artistic director of the piano festival Escapades Pianistiques taking place at the Château de Commarin\, near Dijon\, since 2021.  \n  \nPROGRAMME \nFelix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)\nVariations sérieuses Opus 54 \nThe “serious” attribute of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Variations sérieuses” (composed in 1841) is intended here in order to insist on the composer’s wish to write something quite different from the usual applause-seeking “Variations brillantes”\, which were popular at the time. This work\, often considered one of Mendelssohn’s most personal and introspective compositions\, reflects his romantic sensibilities while drawing on classical forms\, making it a staple of the piano repertoire. \nFrédéric Chopin (1810-1849)\nThree Mazurkas Opus 59\, Polonaise Opus 44 \nIt is known that Mendelssohn and Chopin were close friends\, and their common reverence towards Bach’s music is evident in the way they have both developed their musical language. The national folklore was also a constant source of inspiration for Chopin\, and led to some of his most unique masterpieces. He reached a perfection of creative refinement in his Mazurkas\, and his Polonaises reveal the epic nobility and heroic spirit of his mother country Poland. The Polonaise Op. 44 is perhaps his most patriotic due to its dramatic character and its contrasting central Mazurka. \nINTERVAL \nCésar Franck (1822-1890)\nGrand caprice opus 5 \nThe impact of the virtuosic piano composers of the 19th Century was an inspiration for many musicians\, and we tend to forget that César Franck\, before becoming one of the most influential organists\, had the dream of becoming a virtuoso pianist himself. His Grand Caprice\, composed at the age of 23\, is perhaps his most representative work from his youth for the piano\, and impresses through its tremendous difficulty but also the singularity of its themes which are announcing the unique musician that he will later become. \nGeorges Bizet (1838-1875)\nNocturne in D Major \nAnother composer that one wouldn’t naturally associate with the piano is Georges Bizet\, who during his lifetime was compared to Liszt himself regarding his prowess at the keyboard! One can perceive the tendency of the composer of “Carmen” for pianistic brilliance even in such a moving and poetic work as his Nocturne in D Major. \nFranz Liszt (1811-1886)\nWedding March and Fairies Dance from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream\, S. 410 \nThe overview of the pianistic traditions of the 19th Century would have definitely not have been complete without Franz Liszt\, who revolutionised and set new standards in the history of piano performance. This complete musician was also one of the most generous personalities among composers\, constantly promoting the works of fellow musicians in which he believed. A perfect example of his genius as a transcriber can be found in his Paraphrase of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March\, where his unique sense for dramaturgy is being combined with his perfect knowledge of the instrument\, and gives us also a glimpse of what a stupendous improviser he had to be. The art of transcription was not considered as something minor at that time\, and this work most certainly proves it.

SUMMARY:Brilliant International Musicians Series: Joana Ly (violin) and Martin Andre (piano)

SUMMARY:Marlborough LitFest - Celia Imrie\, Meet me at Rainbow Corner *SOLD OUT*
DESCRIPTION:Celia Imrie is best known as an award-winning actress\, starring in films such as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel\, Calendar Girls and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Over the last ten years\, however\, she has developed an impressive side hustle as a bestselling historical novelist. Her acclaimed Nice trilogy was followed by other hits\, including Sail Away and Orphans of the Storm. \nHer latest book\, Meet Me at Rainbow Corner\, recreates the unique wartime atmosphere of The American Red Cross Club for servicemen on Shaftesbury Avenue in London. It’s here that nurse Dot Gallagher\, freshly arrived from Liverpool\, discovers a haven away from wartime Britain. She discovers love too as she dances the nights away with GIs. There was no rationing in this patch of America in central London – the chewing gum\, donuts and cola were free-flowing – and a steady stream of stars performed at the club\, including Bette Davis\, Fred Astaire and Glenn Miller. \nImrie will be presenting an illustrated talk with her historical researcher\, Fidelis Morgan\, about the true war-bride stories of courage and camaraderie that lie behind her new novel. “Utterly\ncharming and engrossing\,” says Joanna Lumley. “Hugely enjoyable and meticulously researched…. SUMMARY:Marlborough LitFest - Jonathan Dimbleby - Endgame 1944 *SOLD OUT*
DESCRIPTION:While Allied forces were winning through on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944\, Russian troops were embarking upon Operation Bagration on the Eastern Front. After three years of stalemate\, two million Red Army soldiers were pitted against 500\,000 German adversaries\, seeking revenge for their defeat in Operation Barbarossa. The bloody battles along 2000 kilometres proved decisive in defeating Hitler’s forces\, with the loss of 28 out of 32 divisions. \nIn Endgame 1944\, broadcaster and journalist Jonathan Dimbleby\, a familiar voice to us all and now acclaimed for his Second World War histories\, has drawn on previously untranslated German and Russian sources\, many from ‘ordinary’ soldiers\, to paint a picture of this momentous year in all its complexity. His dramatic narrative also sets the backdrop for the relationship between the ‘big three’ of Churchill\, Roosevelt and Stalin\, explaining how the Soviet leader was able to exert such influence on the post-war settlement. \n“It shines a light for general readers on a period of history often the preserve of Eastern Front academics\,” says historian Colonel Robert Kershaw. “It’s a story too little known\, and Dimbleby tells it brilliantly\,” agrees Sir Rodrick Braithwaite\, author of Moscow 1941.

SUMMARY:History Society: Marlborough’s Hidden Places
DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER:  Bob Holman \nBob Holman has lived in Marlborough for a number of years and is a semi-retired coffee shop owner (The Food Gallery). After discovering the incredible capabilities of his iPhone camera\, he has developed a passion for black and white photography. \nTOPIC:\nBob Holman is a local photographer who has discovered that there is a wealth of historical features that belong to Marlborough which have been hidden away over the years. A project developed to find and capture on his iPhone what has been hidden away. He has searched for dungeons\, sewers and underground storage areas. The original plan was to try and plot a kind of subterranean map of the ‘alleyways’ underneath Marlborough\, following the unearthing of one some years ago. Recently\, he photographed an abandoned oven at the Castle and Ball Hotel in the High Street\, where he crawled through a small hole in the building to find it as staff waited outside. Bob said: “It was very dark\, very quiet and damp in there. I wouldn’t say I was scared but it is quite a strange feeling. There was definitely a ‘presence’ down there!”. \n  \nThe Marlborough History Society warmly welcomes guests to our talks at £5.00 per person. Students are free.\nMembership to the Marlborough History Society is £15.00 per annum. If you wish to become a member\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Sound Knowledge - Emily Barker
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce the return of a shop favourite\, as esteemed singer-songwriter Emily Barker joins us all the way from her native Australia on Saturday 4th May. \nEmily will be performing live from 8pm in the stunning St. Peter’s Church and signing copies of her brand new album ‘Fragile As Humans’. \n\nEmily has played for Sound Knowledge numerous times over the years\, solo and in group settings\, and is a spellbinding performer with a body of work that has garnered awards nominations and considerable critical acclaim. This is a brilliant opportunity to catch her the atmospheric setting of St. Peter’s.\nAfter the expansive and political ‘A Dark Murmuration of Words’ (4/5 Mojo\, 8/10 Uncut) new album ‘Fragile As Humans’ is a deep dive into the human condition\, an unflinching self-examination of grief\, pain\, loneliness and loss\, at the same time sparkling with hope and optimism. It’s released on CD\, LP and indies exclusive magenta vinyl on Friday 3rd May.\n\nEntry is FREE but capacity is limited\, so please let Sound Knowledge know if you’d like to attend or pre-order a copy of the album from us to guarantee your place.
