David DuCroz
David Du Croz


David Du Croz has been chairman of St Peter’s and St Paul’s Trust since 2011, having served previously as Treasurer from 2008-2011. He is also in charge of bookings by outside agencies who wish to make use of the church for meetings, concerts, exhibitions and the like.

He and his wife Mary (also previously a trustee) have lived in Marlborough since David moved here to take up the post of Head of History at Marlborough College, having previously been Headmaster of Ellesmere College in Shropshire for eight years. He retired from Marlborough College in 2007, allowing him more time to take on responsibilities at St Peter’s. His charitable experience has been mostly in the governance of schools.

Much of the focus of his chairmanship has been on restoring the internal fabric of the church, on developing the social aspects of membership with quizzes and an annual party, and on promoting the concert series which is about to enter its tenth season. In addition more recently he has overseen moves to modernise the Trust and to bring its operation more into the twenty-first century. He has established close working relationships with the Trust’s licensees, and since the closure of the Craft Shop he has sought to develop alternative use of the west end of the church. With his predecessor, Dr Terry Rogers, he co-wrote the church’s pamphlet about the wall memorials, and throughout the centenary years of the anniversary of the First World War he produced brief in memoriam notices about each of the former parishioners who died in that war.

Outside of St Peter’s activities he is involved with St Mary’s church down the other end of the High St, currently serving on the PCC and assisting with fund-raising. He and Mary developed small group tours of the First World War battlefields which they ran until 2018. He has a passion for horse-racing and owns a small share in a National Hunt horse trained just outside Stow-on-the-Wold – his wife describes St Peter’s as his second home and Cheltenham as his third! He has lectured extensively at Marlborough Summer School and locally on aspects of the First World War and Marlborough Castle.

John Yates


John studied civil engineering at UCL and then worked for Halcrow in the UK and Dubai.  He moved from London to Marlborough in 1984 and in 1993 became a Science teacher at Lavington School near Devizes. John became a Trustee of St Peter’s in 2007 and was elected Treasurer in 2012.  

As Treasurer he reports to the Finance Committee. John administers financial transactions and keeps records. His duties include producing reports to inform Trustees on financial matters and supplying our accountant with data for the Trust’s annual report. He helps to consolidate future spending plans into an annual budget.

John writes plays and has had short pieces performed at fringe festivals. He’s currently writing a trilogy based around Neolithic Avebury and occasionally gives individual tuition in Science subjects.

Nicki Evans


Nicki is a new Trustee having joined St. Peters & St. Paul’s Trust early in 2021 bringing a wealth of local knowledge, charity experience and a diverse commercial background with her. Within the Trust she works with the Outreach sub-committee; which is responsible for communication and social media, educational initiatives and business and membership development. The role demands good communication skills, teamwork and an interest in developing local interactions.

Having lived in the Marlborough area for 28 years she has been involved in a number of local and charitable organisations: Chair of Preshute Primary School PTA, member of the Residents Association, manager of various children’s sports teams and for the last 8 years Chair of Manton village hall; responsible for raising funds and managing a total refurbishment. The skills and local knowledge developed in carrying out these roles has been transferred to the role of Trustee at St. Peter’s. Being involved in the community and developing the resources that are available to be utilised by local people is of paramount importance and this is what the Outreach sub-committee strives to achieve. 

Her business background began in retail management with Marks & Spencer, based all over the country, but then progressed to graduate recruitment with the company. Finally, she joined M&SFS and was involved in the development of the banking arm of the company with particular emphasis on store involvement. Over the last twenty years she has run her own property management company in the Marlborough region with an emphasis on overseeing second homes in the area. Her commercial experience has demanded leadership, teamwork and communication capabilities all of which are utilised as a Trustee. 

AnnMarie Newbigin
AnnMarie Newbigin


After moving to Marlborough from London in 2016, AnnMarie became involved with St Peter’s Church as a volunteer especially contributing to the canapes at various events. Eventually AnnMarie was asked to join the Council and was appointed as a Trustee at the AGM in 2020. Currently, AnnMarie is the Head of the Outreach Committee and responsible for increasing engagement with our local communities in Marlborough and the wider Kennet Valley through our updated website and other social media avenues. She is also a member of the Finance Committee.


From 2010 till 2019, AnnMarie was Chair of the Board of Green Corridor, a charity specializing in providing alternative education and training opportunities for young people with special needs. Previously, AnnMarie held trustee roles with charities involved in cultural conservation and volunteering such as CSV since 1995.


AnnMarie’s experience in the non-profit sector was gained alongside working in the
business world in the areas of management consulting and financial services since coming to the UK from the US in 1988. Initially, she was involved in linking pay to performance with a large number of financial institutions in the City. In the early 1990’s, AnnMarie moved into Corporate Human Resources covering Fixed Income and Corporate
Finance with the investment Bank, UBS, where she became a Managing Director in 1998.
While at UBS, She was a Trustee of the Pension Fund and a member of the Investment Committee and led the major transition to a defined contribution plan from a salary benefit plan.


Since moving to Marlborough, AnnMarie and her husband, Michael, have become active
members of various local organizations and keen participants in the Marlborough College Summer School. For the last two years, AnnMarie has led two Study Groups for the local branch of the u3a; one is on Short Stories and the other group is on American History.

Jane Nicholson


Since moving to Marlborough 25 years ago, Jane has been an active supporter of both local and international charities. Jane is well known for cycling and has participated in a number of sponsored rides in various countries.


Since 2012, Jane has been a trustee of St Peter’s eventually taking on the role of social secretary responsible for organizing a range of successful events.  In addition, Jane conducts tower tours and contributes her gardening skills on a regular basis.  Jane is also a member of the Operations Committee.


Jane also continues as a trustee of The Merchant’s House, the 17th century historic house at the east end of Marlborough’s High Street.  Previously, Jane was a trustee of the Marlborough Brandt Group, a governor of Sherborne Girls’ School and an executive committee member of the local u3a.  


After reading Biochemistry at University College London, Jane then married and moved to Uganda where she taught Maths in a Catholic Mission school on the Congo border.


Following a year in Lebanon where Jane taught chemistry for the British Council her husband joined the Foreign Office. Jane accompanied her husband to postings in Zambia, Romania under Ceausescu and Cyprus, in all of which Jane managed to find teaching work.


After spending six months working in Paris, Jane joined the Security Service (MI5) as a civil servant. Jane’s most memorable posting was as Security Coordinator in Downing Street.  Jane had an office in No 10 and saw a good deal of the two Prime Ministers she served under: John Major and Tony Blair. Following her retirement, Jane spent 2 years working for the Government escorting visiting heads of state and their support teams for the Foreign Office.

Chris Rogers


Chris was elected to the Council as a Trustee in 2020. He chairs the Finance Committee and is a member of the Operations Committee.


Chris grew up in Marlborough leaving when he was eighteen and returning in 2015 after a career in Finance and International business which took him across the world. A Chartered Accountant by trade with extensive experience in general business and project management. He retired from the corporate world at the beginning of 2018 and now focuses on trying to improve his handicap at Marlborough Golf Club where he is a member and until recently as a part time auctioneer. Other interests include walking the Downs, gardening and reading history. He can also be found outside the Wellington Arms enjoying the odd pint when the sun is out.


Chris is carrying on a long family association with St Peters. His father is a past Chairman of the Trust and current Life President.

Mike Stokes


Michael was elected to the Council as a Trustee in 2020, and is the designated Head of the Operations Committee.


As the liaison between the Council and the proprietors of the coffee shop, Michael co-ordinates the re-arrangements required during Covid restrictions. He helps the Chairman during the regular concert series and will continue to be the link for the day-to-day operation of activities within the Church.


In addition, as assistant Tower Constable, Michael undertakes regular guided tours of St Peter’s tower and is on hand to raise and lower flags, wind the clock, and help with other tower duties.


Michael is particularly interested in the history of Marlborough and is eager to bring to wider attention the town’s significant events through the activities of the Trust and the use of the Church for the benefit of the community and tourists.


Married to a Canadian in Salisbury Cathedral in 1967, Michael and Rosamund have owned a house in Marlborough since 1981, where they have lived whenever Service and other duties have allowed.  Together they have enjoyed much foreign travel by land, sea and air, are social bridge players and own 2 oriental dogs.


Previously, Michael spent 33 years in the RAF involved flying Hercules tactical transport aircraft all over the world, often into inhospitable territory or climate, undertaking famine and disaster relief missions in addition to low level insertion and extraction of para-troops by day and night, training crews in air refuelling and as a meteorological research test pilot.  


On retirement from the RAF as a Wing Commander in 1997, Michael spent the next 20 years training young men and women to become airline pilots at Oxford Airport, helping over 500 students develop their confidence, responsibility and the self-discipline required for this demanding profession.


Finally in 2017, after 50 years as a professional pilot and with 20,000 flying hours under his belt, he folded his wings.  He hopes now to use all his experience gained as a Serviceman to enhance the opportunities for St Peter’s Trust to serve the community.

Ron Yates


Ron and his wife, Allyson, moved to Marlborough in 1988 from Lancashire. They have 3 adult girls and 5 grandchildren (4 girls and 1 boy). They have always loved Marlborough, particularly the building of St Peter’s Church, and have been members of St Peter’s Trust for many years. Ron was invited to become Membership Secretary of the Trust in 2017 and also now serves on the Trust’s Finance Committee and the Outreach Committee. As Membership Secretary, Ron is responsible for managing and maintaining all membership records, encouraging & helping new members to join the Trust and liaising with members regarding some of the events taking place at St Peter’s Church.


Ron graduated in Business Studies in 1969 and followed a career in Insurance with some major insurers & brokers. Subsequently, he joined several US Corporations heading up their international insurance operations outside of North America. For the last 12 years, before retiring in 2013, Ron created and owned a Financial Services business and promoted a Concierge business.


Ron’s interests include music (a passion), reading, sports (including attempting to play golf!), walking, good food & wine and life generally.

Jeremy York


Jeremy York became a Trustee in 2006, having moved with his wife to Marlborough from Shropshire in 2005.As Tower Constable he is a member of the Trust Operations Committee, with special responsibility for the maintenance of the Tower, guided tours of the Tower, regular winding and adjusting of the Clock and the flying of 25 different flags on appropriate days of the year. He also has overall responsibility for care of the churchyard, with its trees, flowerbeds, pathways and benches.


Jeremy York served in the Regular Army during the Cold War after reading Modern Languages at Jesus College, Oxford. Over the course of his career he spent a good deal of time gathering military intelligence in communist Eastern Europe. His interests include military history, war poetry, archaeology, conservation work on the Salisbury Plain Training Area and writing (both fiction and non-fiction). Jeremy retired as from the Army with the rank of Major and also holds a MBE.
